Paper Towns & Looking For Alaska by John Green

Hi Everyone!
So sorry for the lack of posting! I've been travelling around with my family and have been lacking time (and wifi connection). So, here's a review!!!
Today, I will be reviewing two divine books by the jaw-dropping, fantastic John Green!
The two books I shall be talking about are: Looking For Alaska and Paper Towns. I've read three of his books, the two mentioned above, as well as The Fault In Our Stars. I've decided to review my two favourites first, and then talk about TFIOS at a later date! :)

For those who haven't read these books yet:
John Green's award-winning debut, Looking For Alaska, revolves around Miles 'Pudge' Halter, a boy obsessed with last words and who lives a boring life. He craves the 'Great Perhaps', so he heads off to the far-from-boring Culver Creek Boarding School. Here he meets the smart, sexy and incredibly fascinating Alaska Young, and his life changes forever - she steals his heart. Then it happens...and for Pudge, nothing ever stays the same.

Paper Towns
Quentin 'Q' Jacobsen has spent his whole entire life hopelessly in love with Margo Roth Spiegelman. So when she shows up dressed like a ninja in the middle of the night, and asks him to accompany her on a night of revenge, he agrees.

After the crazy all-nighter ends, and the new day begins, Margo becomes a mystery...and disappears. But, there are clues - clues left for Q. So Quentin follows the string of complicated and confusing clues, and the closer he gets, the more he becomes uncertain of the Margo he thought he knew.

Reviews:
Wow. That was my reaction after finishing both these books. I devoured them in what seemed like seconds, and I found it so difficult to tear myself away from the two amazing novels.

Paper Towns was this entertaining mystery that I fell in love with from the first page. The prologue was a little strange, but it just flows. I loved feeling like Sherlock Holmes, and was unraveling the clues alongside the characters in the book. Which brings me to my next point: the characters John Green has conjured are utterly fantastic. Q and his friends are so intelligent, and equally as hilarious. I had tears rolling down my face from laughing too hard, because Ben Starling (my favourite character...EVER) and the others are the wittiest people I've ever come across. Margo is so eccentric, with her ideas and habits, and I went from loving her, to hating her, to loving her all over again. She is this character that has so many dimensions, that I am in awe of John Green's sheer brilliance.

The philosophies brought up in this novel opened up a whole new perspective on life, and I sat there for a long time thinking about the knowledgeable ideas John Green has created and written in such a poetic and beautiful way.

This book taught me so much about life, love, friendship, and chasing what you want, no matter what is left behind.

Memorable Quotes:
“What a treacherous thing to believe that a person is more than a person.”
“It is so hard to leave—until you leave. And then it is the easiest goddamned thing in the world.”
“I didn’t need you, you idiot. I picked you. And then you picked me back.”

Looking For Alaska, was a magical debut. For the first half of the book, you meet these weird and wonderful characters, and they become so close to you...so when it happens, your heart breaks, when theirs do. I promise you, you will be left breathless and with tears in your eyes by the end of the book. Pudge's journey through love, grief and loss is incredible, and teaches you about the real world and how bad things can happen to good people.

John Green's use of last words, in particular, concerning the 'labyrinth', conveys how death is inevitable and unforeseen...who knows what your last words will be?

Not only is this book heartbreaking and tragic, it is also very funny, and you will go from laughing so hard in one chapter, to crying in the other. If I could say one thing, it would be: I would love to find out more about it, maybe get a letter? Just some more reasoning behind it (even though we do find out a lot).

The last chapter will really hit home, as it talks about death in its truest form, and about how society likes to deal with death. The way Pudge struggles with everything is clearly shown in this chapter.

Memorable Quotes:
“The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.”
“When I look at my room, I see a girl who loves books.”
“And then something invisible snapped insider her, and that which had come together commenced to fall apart.”

  1. Dear Tyra, I love how your passion for books and reading comes through in your review. The only suggestion I have is to do consecutive reviews of books, I've found that doing more than one book per review tends to detract from the books. They both don't get the amount of attention they deserve because the focus is spread out over multiple books (except if it is a series, then you do a series review). I look forward to reading more of your passionate reviews! I really enjoyed reading your review!

I was a little unsure about reviewing two books in one post, so your advice has helped me enormously!
